AWAA Steering Committee Meeting Minutes

February 8, 2010 @ Elliott Bay Brewery Cafe

The meeting was called to order at 5:30pm by co-chair Susan Miller. In attendance were: Susan Miller, Marilyn Ullin, Pam Lund, Hans Westphal, Glenda Weibel, Nichole DeMent, Stephen Rock and Ben Brackin.

Chair Reports

  • Secretary: The January minutes were approved as amended, with Nichole noting that we should refer to the ArtsWest Gallery rather than the "lobby."
  • Treasurer: Pam reported income of $70 in January, resulting in a balance of $3,243.53. She also shared a report showing that for 2009, total income was $424 and expenses $1461.11, resulting in average of $87 loss per month.
  • Membership: Hans reported four new members joined AWAA in January. It was suggested we make a point to welcome new members and guests at every monthly meeting.
  • Venues: Marilyn reported that Chez Dominique was in bankruptcy. Glenda Weibel was fortunately able to access her paintings by working with the building owner. While there was no question of ownership of Glenda's artwork, we do not want any repeats of this kind of problem. Glenda's brother, a lawyer, is going to research contracts that would apply for art consignments and create something we can use. Nichole will review the contract and then Marilyn will contact all current venue owners to get their signatures. Marilyn also reported two new venues: Lee's Asian Restaurant, where Hans will hang beginning 2/10 and A-Plus Hearing Aid, where Carol Griffin is now showing.
  • Programs: Nichole reported that a review of our small group sessions at the January meeting indicated that the group's primary interest is in a digital photography workshop. The second issue we were most interested in pursuing was more visibility and promotion of our individual artwork. Glenda will consolidate all of the handwritten information into something that can be shared with the membership. Tonight's program is Ben leading an instructional session in stenciling on t-shirts, using the AWAA Group Show logo. The March meeting (group critique/sharing of ideas and art in process for the group show) and April meeting (Ikebana demonstration) are planned as per previous discussion.

Other Business

  • 2010 Group Show
    • Nichole has a call scheduled for 2/10 with the Seattle Art Museum. It's important that, as we work to tie in with the SAM exhibits that run concurrently with our show, that we keep to parameters that Nichole has presented (most recently, in the e-mail to all members with a list of questions to build from).
    • Stephen suggested that we create a group of notecards of individual works to sell in conjunction with the show. Nichole added that she is open to sellling cards of AWAA member artwork in the Gallery throughout the year.
  • Seattle City Hall Galleries Show
    • Ben reported that AWAA was not selected for the City Hall's 2010-2011 schedule, but that we are on the alternate list if there is a problem with another show. Nichole said she received email indicating that our January submission was well-received, so we should not be discouraged.
  • Convention Center Show
    • Marilyn had previously notified the Steering Committee that the Seattle Convention Center has reopened its submission process after stalling out last year, and submissions are due 3/26/10. Ben Brackin agreed to head this effort, with support from Stephen Rock and Pam Lund. Ideally, our submission team will be able to re-purpose much of what was done for the City Hall submission. It is agreed that we need to build a database of artwork that can be used for these submissions and other purposes.
  • Website
    • Susan thanked Nichole for handling the last minute renewal of the artswestartists.org domain name registration with GoDaddy at the beginning of the month. Nichole updated the GoDaddy account so that email from them will be received in a more timely matter for action.
    • Pam Lund is checking on the availability of a web server we could use for hosting the web site.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:40pm.
